Howard C. Lapensohn is a CPA and a technologist and, naturally, one to give others advice. He's made a healthy business out of preaching and demonstrating the benefits of incorporating technology to improve business processes.  As owner and president of Lapensohn & Associates, A Professional Corporation, he serves a diverse client base, including start-ups, established manufacturers, a pro-bono nursing home client, and other Philadelphia-area businesses. His CPA firm and related business entities provide technology consulting, setup, training, and ongoing support in a number of business environments.

  A small but growing Philadelphia firm, Lapensohn & Associates embodies what the AICPA repeatedly warns the profession must become in order to survive the increasingly competitive world of accounting, tax and consulting services: technologically savvy and diversified. As a result, the firm offers an expanded version of traditional accounting services. Meanwhile, Howard keeps his eye on technology and the increasing need to use it effectively. Indeed, as a member of several AICPA and PICPA committees and as a lecturer, he has helped to spread the message of technological integration both officially and demonstrably through his work.

  “Technology and business expertise have meshed together,” says Lapensohn, who is also an Accredited Personal Financial Specialist. “You can't function today as a competent business advisor without having some understanding of how [technology] affects your clients’ environment.”  He continues, “My approach focuses around the clients’ involvement and giving [them] what they want,” emphasizing the need for clients to have at least some participation in, and understanding of, technology.

  But he doesn’t stop there.

  Howard is also the founding shareholder and executive vice president of Innovative Technology Solutions, LTD (“ITS”).  An internet-based reseller, ITS is a nationally known provider of technology solutions for small and medium-sized businesses, including other CPA firms.  The company is also nationally known in the insurance industry and serves clients that administer extended warranty, insurance replacement, and all major credit card Buyer’s Assurance programs.

In keeping with his vision to offer choices and a better understanding of technology as a way to improve his clients’ businesses, Howard and his wife Jill recently partnered with BusinessVision Technologies, Inc. as the Mid-Atlantic Regional Provider for its accounting software products. With this new entity, Mid-Atlantic Accounting Software Solutions, LLC, Howard and Jill will offer small and mid-sized businesses the advantages of e-commerce capabilities, multi-currency, and revolutionary management tools to keep them competitive in today's market. Mid-Atlantic Accounting Software Solutions, LLC will play a key role by helping to build, train, and certify a channel of technology resellers and accounting firms that will represent BusinessVision’s product line in the Mid-Atlantic region.

  Howard graduated in 1983 from the Syracuse University School of Management with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting.  He resides in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, with his wife Jill and two children.

Mr. Lapensohn serves as the immediate past chair of the PICPA Technology Committee and served as co-chair of the 1999 PICPA Technology Conference and chair of the 2000 conference.  He has also served as a member of the Steering Committee for Tech 98 – The AICPA Computer and Technology Conference, and was a member of the Advisory Board for Tech 99 and Tech 00.
