Installing ACCPAC Advantage Series with Pervasive SQL.8 - Speaker Ian de Leon, ACCPAC International, Inc.

Ian de Leon's presentation began with a an overview of compatibility issues and installation tips, and then gave a live demonstration of installing the Pervasive Database.  He said that Pervasive DB is not compatible with older versions, but that it could coexist with other non-related databases.  Pervasive runs under Windows 9x and ME, as well as Linux.  Use ACCPAC database dump if you are moving to another database platform.  He reminded us that it is possible to dump damaged data, so make sure you back up all data before you dump it.

The first step to Pervasive installation or upgrade, is to stop all the services that you can.  The most important of the services that you should stop is the IIS Server.  When you begin the install, the software will walk you through a series of standard, self-explanatory screens that are easily followed.  One of the first screens asks you what kind of install you would like to perform, Custom or Typical.  Custom option is used for network, but Ian suggested that it is best to always choose the Typical in order to avoid problems.

The system will then give options for the launch of  the Pervasive System Analyzer, which performs tests to determine the configuration of your system.  It will determine if older versions of Btreive or Pervasive already exist on your system, test the connectivity, and offer options for database configuration:  relational or transactional.  You can select all so that all options are tested.

Ian said that the Workgroup engine causes the most problems.  He then drew a diagram that showed a typical workgroup scenario, with one machine labeled as the server (called the Gateway).  In order to deploy such a situation successfully, you must shut down the MKDE on all machines except the Gateway machine.  The system automatically detects protocols and changes can be easily made by double clicking the section you want to change.

Ian offered some tips on troubleshooting if you get errors:

  • If you get the error code 40962, then you should shell to a DOS prompt and make sure that PDWS is in the path.  This error indicates that it may not be there or may be corrupted, in either case you should reinstall the Pervasive database.
  • 49513 is an ACCPAC error code, indicating a database engine problem function executor utility.
  • CSAPP.ADT is the first file ACCPAC opens when it accesses the database, so you may need to make sure your system has that file, or you will get errors.
  • Use the Function Executor to find additional errors.
  • To troubleshoot more error codes, go to Pervasive's website.  They have a section dedicated to error code definitions.
